Pest control at Rangikapiti Reserve
Rangikapiti Reserve has beautiful regenerating bush and a variety of native birds that are threatened by many rampant weeds and pests. We are attempting to reduce the numbers of possums, rats and mustelids with a network of traps that need regular servicing. New volunteers will be trained on trapping, and on the Trapnz app we use to manage our trap network and record catches. We provide equipment and some bait as needed. We support Ngati Kahu who are the kaitiaki of the Rangikapiti Pā and reserve, and are supported by the Department of Conservation.
You can message us through Facebook 'Friends of Rangikapiti' page.
Requirements
The traps are off the tracks so volunteers need to be fit and confident in the bush. Once trained, volunteers will be servicing the traps on their own. You will need a smart phone to use the App in the bush. you will need to be able to clear the dead pests from the traps and dispose of them in the bush - sometime a bit smelly and unpleasant!
Time commitment
Volunteers will be allocated a set of traps to look after at least once a fortnight. These generally take 2 to 3 hours. There are occasional meeting with other trappers to plan work, compare notes or be involved in related monitoring.
