Treasurer – Board Member - Sistema Whangārei
Sistema Whangārei Toi Akorangi is seeking a community-minded Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. This voluntary position is ideal for someone with financial experience who believes in youth development and the power of music to create social change.
About us:
Sistema Whangārei is part of a global movement inspired by El Sistema, a visionary music education programme in Venezuela. We provide free, intensive orchestral music education to tamariki in Whangārei, fostering confidence, discipline, teamwork and a sense of belonging.
Requirements
The role:
As Treasurer, you’ll oversee the financial health of the organisation, working closely with the Board, General Manager and Xero software reports. You'll help ensure Sistema Whangārei remains financially sustainable and legally compliant as we grow our reach and impact.
Key responsibilities:
Monitor financial performance and report monthly summaries at Board meetings
Assist with organisation budgets and planning
Assist staff on grant accountability and reporting
Ensure compliance with relevant financial and charitable regulations
Support auditing procedures
We’re looking for someone who:
Has experience in finance, accounting, or related fields (qualifications are welcome but not required)
Has familiarity with finance requirements of charities
Is confident reading financial statements and relaying insights
Can commit to 6-12 board meetings per year, and some additional liaison time
Believes in our kaupapa and the value of music for all children

A Police background check is required for this role.
Time commitment
2-3 hours per month. Check the bookkeeping/financials and present and explain reports at the monthly board meeting.
