Support/Liaison Volunteer

Become a Support/Liaison Volunteer for the Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT)!

  • Are you passionate about literacy but don’t have time for an ongoing weekly commitment ? Look no further! This is a meaningful role taking a fortnight each term, at times that suit you. This can be one-off or ongoing.

**What You'll Do As a Support/Liaison Volunteer.

  • You will be given a spreadsheet of 5-6 names. You will be buddied with another volunteer.
  • Each buddy group will have someone who can call during the day (8am – 3pm) and someone who can call in the early evenings. (3–5pm or 5-7pm)
  • You and your buddy will be able to message each other about who you have got hold of and who you are having trouble reaching.
  • We will provide you with a phone app so that calls won’t cost you anything and your number will not be the calling number that our students see.
  • The week before you start we will run a Zoom training and will record that for those who miss it – or so you can go back and listen to it again.

What We're Looking For

  • The main qualities you need are: be friendly, patient, love helping others, and willing to fill in answers on a spreadsheet while following a script.
  • You will need moderate technology skills. You will be required to download and use our messaging app, Slack, for communication, set up the phone app and fill in a spreadsheet.
  • We have tech support people who can help you learn to use these tools, if you are not confident. Using them is an essential part of the role.
  • Someone who can make a number of phone calls each day over two weeks.
  • It would be great if you can do this every term but even once for a fortnight is appreciated.

About our students

  • Students vary from people learning the alphabet to those wanting to write essays, but most are somewhere in between.
  • They don’t have the skills they need for everyday life.
  • Our students range in age from 14 to 65 and are from all walks of life.

Requirements

• Good computer skills • Excellent spoken English• Reliable. • A friendly caring personality • Likes chatting on the phone

A Police background check is required for this role.
