Weekend Weed Warriors - Matakohe Limestone Island
The 'Weekend Weed Warriors' meet on the third Sunday of every third month. We work as a group to minimise the impact of invasive weeds on Matakohe Limestone Island. This is achieved by hand pulling, hand sawing, and cutting and pasting (with herbicide). Not confident in your weed identification abilities? No problem. You will learn how to identify and control a range of different weed species by working alongside our more experienced volunteer weeders. The main weed species that you will be working to control are Mothplant, Mexican Devil, Chinese privet, Taiwanese cherry, and cotoneaster...but there are plenty of others!
Requirements
Moderate level of fitness - we cover a reasonable amount of terrain
Steady on your feat - we are often working in the bush on uneven and sometimes slippery ground
We will provide all of the equipment you need for the day, however, if you do have a favourite handsaw or pair of clippers, feel free to bring them along.
Time commitment
We meet four times a year on the third Sunday of every third month. Pickup is from the Onerahi pontoon at 10 am and we aim to have you back on the mainland by 2 pm.
