Weed Bashers, Handypersons and Mechanics wanted for Heritage Park
We are looking for volunteers to assist the team with weed fighting at the Heritage Park to keep the train tracks clear, as well as handyperson jobs around the station.
The Whangarei Steam and Model Railway Club is located in the Heritage Park grounds and operates diesel and a steam locomotive, jiggers and two 1924 restored trams for the public on running days. The Club is a mechanical version of the Men's Shed - anyone is welcome!
We have a need for volunteers in a few areas:
- Weed bashing and gardening to help the Heritage Park team in its ongoing fight against Daphne and other invasive creepers.
- Jobs around the train station: maintaining the buildings and grounds.
- Track & tram restoration / maintenance of woodwork, metalwork, engineering, diesel mechanics.
If you enjoy a cuppa and a natter as well as a bit of hard work at times... we can find plenty to occupy you!
We invite those interested to contact the President who will arrange a tour of facilities and discuss possible involvement.
Requirements
- any practical skills, like woodwork, metalwork, engineering, electrical skills, restauration
- for mechanics: experience with maintaining Diesel engines
optional:
- interest in historic archiving and museum management and maintenance
Time commitment
The train, jiggers and trams are operated on the third Sunday of each month in conjunction with the Model Engineers who operate miniature railway and the Tractor Club.
Additionally, most members meet every Monday and Friday at 9.00 am to carry out the tasks that need to be done to maintain safe and efficient running.
