Local Organising Committe- Athletics Event 2027
2027 Colgate Games | Whangārei
We’re forming a passionate Local Organising Committee (LOC) to help deliver the 2027 Colgate Games in Whangārei. These roles work closely with Athletics Northland (AN) and Athletics New Zealand (ANZ) to ensure a high‑quality, nationally significant event.
Chair:
Leads the Local Organising Committee and provides overall coordination and direction
Acts as the key liaison between the LOC, Athletics Northland and Athletics New Zealand
Ensures strong communication, clear decision‑making, and progress across all workstreams
Funding Lead
Oversees the local funding plan and works closely with Athletics Northland on revenue generation
Coordinates sponsorship, grants and fundraising activity aligned to the agreed funding plan
Regularly updates the LOC and works alongside AN to track progress and priorities
Officials Lead
Supports the recruitment and coordination of approximately 65 event officials
Works closely with Athletics New Zealand and local officials to promote involvement
Coordinates logistics for out‑of‑town officials, including accommodation and transport
Volunteer Lead
Leads recruitment and coordination of event volunteers across event week
Allocates volunteers to roles such as event set‑up, pack‑down and operational support
Works closely with the Officials Lead to ensure seamless workforce planning
(This role can be combined with the Officials Lead, though two closely connected roles are recommended.)
Ceremonies Lead
Plans and delivers opening, medal and presentation ceremonies
Works with Athletics New Zealand and sponsors to coordinate presenters and dignitaries
Manages ceremony timing and logistics to ensure smooth integration into the event programme
Equipment Lead
Coordinates all event equipment required to deliver a national‑level athletics event
Works with Athletics Northland, Athletics New Zealand and local clubs to confirm needs
Supports transport, set‑up and readiness of equipment before and during the event

Requirements
An interest in sport, events, or community leadership
Willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team
Good communication skills and reliability
Ability to contribute ideas, problem‑solve, and follow through on agreed actions
Experience in sport, events, governance, logistics, or project coordination is helpful but not required
A passion for helping deliver a high‑quality event for young athletes and the Whangārei community
A Police background check is required for this role.
Time commitment
Approximately 3 hours per month on average during planning phases (March 2026 to November 2026)
Time commitment will increase in the weeks leading into the event in January, with the greatest involvement required during event week 7-10th January 2027.
Most work will be scheduled in advance and shared across the committee to ensure workloads remain manageable
