Kauri Museum Hosts

With the arrival of our busy season, the Kauri Museum is looking for volunteers to help enhance the experience of our visitors. The Host's role is two-fold. Firstly, we want to make out visitors feel welcome and at home at the museum, and secondly, we want to understand more about what they enjoyed at the museum and what would bring them back.

The Kauri Museum is open seven days a week, from 9am-5pm. The busiest time is generally between 10am and 1pm with the arrival of the international bus tours. Hosts would generally be rostered on over the busier periods, or between 10am and 4pm but there is considerable flexibility in scheduling sessions. Ideally, a two or three hour volunteer session would be invaluable to us.

With the main Museum building covering 4,500 square meters, visitors are often grateful to have someone point the way to various parts of the collection, or indicate the nearest toilets. Many of our visitors are international tourists and they are keen to hear about New Zealand culture and our way of life. They sometime have questions about particular aspects of the exhibits. A visitor's experience can be significantly enhanced through friendly interaction with staff and volunteers. That is the primary role of the Hosts - these are the Front of House heroes!

In addition, understanding more about our visitors - what they enjoyed, how they heard about the museum, why they would come back again - is valuable knowledge for the museum. Hosts will be encouraged to ask visitors about their experience at the museum and record this information for future use, as well as giving directions and explaining about the museum.

Training will be given to new Hosts to familiarize themselves with the museum's layout and collections, enable them to answer questions about the museum, and understand what information the museum wishes to capture.

If you enjoy meeting new people, chatting with foreigners, or enhancing other people's days, you might be ideal for this role. The ability to assist once a week, or once a month, (whatever suits you), would be appreciated by the museum. The role is seasonal as our visitor numbers usually decline in April. We welcome all queries or applications for these positions. Contact Marion Walsh for further information on (021) 823 944 or email volunteers@kaurimuseum.com. We look forward to hearing from you. Come and join the Kauri Museum team.
