Support worker

Our support workers provide tailored immediate and short term emotional support, practical assistance, information and referrals to other agencies, plus support through the criminal justice system and coronial process.

There is Initial Training; a full Saturday over Zoom, then a two-hour coached small-group session on the Saturday two weeks later, also over Zoom. This plus eLearning.

  • Supervision/Support: The volunteer will be mentored and coached by the Team Leader, buddied up with an experienced Support Volunteer or staff - Support worker and will be debriefed by the Team Leader on crisis call outs.
  • Support volunteers and Staff get together once a month for ongoing training.
  • One on one coaching is provided by the Team Leader every 6 months.

Requirements

  • Empathy, good communication, non-judgemental, confidentiality, takes direction well, computer literate and access to a computer.
  • Efficient in submitting case notes on time via the computer (you need to have computer and internet access at home)
  • Full driving License.
  • Police vetting check.
  • Reliable and able to commit to the roster and ongoing monthly training meetings.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

We require, at least, one 12 hour shift per week. This means that the Support volunteer can go about their everyday business, but must be contactable so our Contact Service can reach them. This may result in the volunteer attending a crisis call out or making a phone call to the victim.

We provide 24/7 365 days support and use a roster system depending on hours which suit the individual support worker.

A key need for us currently is evening shifts and weekends cover for crisis calls and call outs (please note there is some followup and admin required for all calls).
