Kerikeri Community Patrol Inc., New members wanted

Qualified members of the Kerikeri Community Patrol Inc., work in pairs throughout the Bay of Islands. In close cooperation with Police, patrols are usually conducted in a motor vehicle but may also be on foot.

The patrol is managed by an autonomous committee. All members are eligible for election to the committee. Members are neither Police nor vigilante, their primary purpose is to be additional eyes and ears for Police, without getting involved in confrontations.

Training is provided within a framework defined by Community Patrols of New Zealand (CPNZ). Practical and operational aspects of training are overseen by both our own training officer and our local Police Liaison Officer. Each member must be signed off by the Police Liaison Officer as competent before acting as a patrol leader.

Requirements

Academic qualifications are not required, however good literacy, the ability to write succinct reports and perform simple computer-related tasks are to the member's advantage. A personal email address is mandatory. A sober, drug-free disposition, honesty and the ability to respect confidentiality is mandatory.
Observation skills and patience are useful attributes. The ability to accept responsibility along with attention to detail and clear thinking are also very important. An ability to interface with the public in a friendly manner is another desirable attribute. A full Class 1 driver license would be useful but is not mandatory if wishing to work as an observer. There is a three month probationary period.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment

A condition of membership is the ability to participate in at least one two-hour patrol-related activity per calendar month in addition to attending meetings as required, intended to be only once per month. Opportunities for much greater involvement are available, it is the individual member's choice how much to get involved.
