Treasurer (Trustee)

Bay of Islands Waldorf Education Trust (BOIWET) is a community organisation that is committed to the educational philosophies of Rudolf Steiner. We work in a variety of ways to highlight the importance of child development theories in the application of teaching, and to engender the skills and confidence in the young child so that they grow into free, morally responsible and integrated person.

Position title: Treasure Trustee
Location  Bay of Island
Hours: 10-15 hours per month

Purpose: The Treasurer plays an integral role in overseeing the organisation’s finances, working alongside fellow trustees and staff to review and advise on budget management, reporting requirements and legal compliance in regard to financial matters. This is a voluntary role that requires a time commitment of approximately 10-15 hours per month (fluctuating around periods of reporting etc.) and may require the need to deal with time sensitive tasks. The trust employs an accountant and financial administration is undertaken by staff, the treasurer’s role is one of direction setting, oversight and assurance.

KEY TASKS
Weekly
  • Give co-authority assurance for weekly batch payments that include rent, wages, ACC levy, PAYE.
Monthly
  • Provide a financial report to the board including income and expense, budget progress, payments for approval and the general health of the organisation.
  • Attend board meetings once a month and provide a verbal update on report, respond to any questions and ensure that trustees understand financial reports.
Annually
  • Oversee a professional review of the organisation’s annual finances to be adopted at the AGM.
  • File the organisation’s annual finances (and review) with the charities commission
  • Provide to the AGM any other reporting requirements
  • Provide advice and support to Office staff on the production of budgets to be approved annually
  • Ensure staff comply with financial reporting obligations
Ad-hoc
  • Query irregularities with office staff or directly via Xero and initiate investigations into inconsistencies and errors early.
  • Provide financial advise to senior staff and trustees on claiming of expenses, financial authority and approvals.

Specific requirements
KEY SKILLS
  • Qualification or equivalent experience in finance, accounting or related field.
  • Integral and honest, as the kaitiaki of our finances you must demonstrate your integrity and respect for processes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a range of different people with varying backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently when required.
PREFERRED SKILLS
  • Experience on a board, in a governance role or as a trustee of an organisation
  • Experience in New Zealand education sector, especially early childhood level
  • Knowledge, understanding of and interest in Steiner philosophy particularly to do with education
  • Experience with xero and online banking
  • Previous experience conducting a review and filing this with Charities Services
  • Lives in the Bay of Islands region
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to commit to a two-year term as trustee.
