Fighting weeds in Kerikeri Basin
Weedbusters is a weeds awareness and education programme that aims to protect New Zealand's environment from the increasing weed problem.
We are looking for team-members weeding in the Kerikeri River Scenic Reserve to enhance native forest regeneration. Weeds include jasmine, moth plant, climbing asparagus, Japanese honeysuckle, banana passion-fruit, Taiwan cherry, tobacco weed, loquat, monkey apple, kahili ginger, wandering jew and African club moss, all of which threaten the next generation of forest plants.
The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month from 9am to 12 noon.
On-site training in weed recognition and weed control methods will be given. Control methods include the use of Vigilant gel as a poison.
A knowledge of native plants is useful but not essential. A reasonable level of fitness is required for the walk in to the site, which has some steep slopes, and for carrying out the bagged-up weeds to our composting bag near the Kerikeri DoC office.
