New Zealand Red Cross Disaster Welfare and Support Team volunteers
Our disaster response teams respond to emergencies in communities across New Zealand.
There are approx 20 teams with around 450 volunteers throughout New Zealand! Our Disaster Welfare Support Team (DWST) in Whangarei has a maximum of 20 team members and we are currently looking to grow our numbers to make sure the team is full at all times.
Our disaster response teams are made up of highly committed, multi-skilled emergency service volunteers. They have a wide variety of backgrounds, delivering essential services during and immediately following a disaster.
Team members train regularly, usually every fortnight. They will mostly train and respond to emergencies in their local area, but may travel throughout New Zealand supporting other Red Cross teams when needed. Our response teams are trained in a variety of skills, from first aid to ground-based rescue, which benefit both themselves and the New Zealand community.
You'll find our teams in our state-of-the-art disaster welfare and support vehicles, providing support and disaster services to affected communities. You’ll find them in Civil Defence Centres – they’re the friendly faces looking after you and your family – and you’ll find them on the ground, mucking in and getting on with the job.
As a volunteer team member you must be available for 24-hour, seven-day call out for periods up to five days when responding to emergency events.
If you would like more detailed information on what is involved in becoming part of our team please have a look at the following link: https://www.redcross.org.nz/what-we-do/in-new-zealand/disaster-management/help-respond-disasters/disaster-response-teams/
