Pukenui Forest Field Assistant

The Pukenui Forest Trust was formed through community consultation to oversee the Pukenui/Western Hills Forest - the Lungs of Whangarei - and largest remaining area of native forest in the Whangarei District, located on the doorstep of Whangarei city.

We are looking for enthusiastic Volunteer Field Assistants to  help our dedicated rangers with a variety of conservation activities to help restore this taonga to its former glory.

Weather you are looking for extra work experience in the field of environmental studies, or just have a passion for conservation and the outdoors, you can pick from a wide range of activities on offer:

Pest monitoring: Regular pest surveys are conducted throughout the year, and are an important part of the extensive pest control work we do.

Trapping: After a half/day training with a ranger, you will take on the responsibility of monitoring a line two times a month and will carry out basic trap maintenance including checking, setting, clearing and re-baiting traps.

Toxin operations: You must have a toxin licence to carry out these operations

Track upgrades: cutting in tracks and track maintenance

Planting and weed control: become part of our regular community working bee helping to enhance native forest regeneration.

Public Education Programmes: helping out during public events (kiwi release days, forest walks, Conservation Week)

 

Training
On-the-job training provided (pest monitoring, trapping, weed/plant identification and weed control methods)

Reference provided after some time

 

Specific requirements
Open to all levels of experience and capabilities but you must have:
  • A passion for conservation and the outdoors
  • A  reasonable level of fitness and bush savviness
